The founder of The Echohouse, and my (awesome) new boss is Adwoa Beryl Agyekum. And ever since our first emails in February I have wondered about the first part of her name (the ‘Adwoa’ bit), seeing as she introduced herself as Beryl.
I have since learned that this means that she was born on a Monday and that ‘Adwoa’ is associated with peace.
According to Wikipedia:
‘The Akan people of Togo, Ghana and the Ivory Coast frequently name their children after the day of the week they were born and the order in which they were born. These “day names” have further meanings concerning the soul and character of the person…
..Most Ghanaians have at least one name from this system, even if they also have an English or Christian name. Notable figures with day names include Ghana’s first president Kwame Nkrumah and former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.’
I was born on a Tuesday. The name for Tuesday children is ‘Abénaa’. And ‘Abénaa’is associated with the ocean!!
